AnselEastonAdams(February20,1902–April22,1984)wasanAmericanphotographerandenvironmentalist,bestknownforhisblack-and-whitephotographsoftheAmericanWestandprimarilyYosemiteNationalPark.
Forhisimages,hedevelopedthezonesystemofphotography,awaytocalculatetheproperexposureofaphotograph.Theresultingclarityanddepthwerecharacteristicofhisphotographs.Hiscrystalclearimageswerealsotheresultofhisusingthelargeformat8×10”filmcamera,whichprovidedamaximumresolution,althoughitwasamongthemostdifficultcamerastouseduetoitslargesize,weight,set-uptime,andfilmcost.However,itwastypicalofthelengthshewouldgotoachievehisvisionofperfection.
HefoundedtheGroupf/64alongwithfellowphotographersEdwardWestonandImogenCunningham,whichwasresponsibleforthefoundingoftheMuseumofModernArt'sdepartmentofphotography.Adams'timelessandvisuallystunningphotographsareconstantlyreproducedoncalendars,posters,andinbooks,makinghisphotographswidelyrecognizable.Andasaresult,hisimagesareamongthemostsignificantandfamiliarcontributionstothehistoryofphotography.
